A house on the Currumbin headland

Beton means concrete. The house is an award-winning concrete residence across the street from Currumbin Beach. Three levels, two private lifts, and a rooftop terrace that looks over the Alley, up the coast to the Surfers Paradise skyline and back to the hinterland.

Four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, eight guests. Two of the levels are self-contained, so the house suits two families as easily as one.

The rooftop

A bioethanol fire pit, a long table for eight under the lights, a gas barbecue, a lounge and a hammock. The sun sets over the creek, the skyline sits on the horizon, and on New Year's Eve the fireworks arrive without anyone leaving the house.

It is reached from both top-level bedrooms, and it is where every evening ends.

Three levels, two lifts

Top level: the master suite, with the ocean from the bed, a walk-in robe, a double-vanity ensuite and its own sitting room. Beside it, a two-bedroom retreat with its own bathroom. Both open onto the rooftop.

Mid level: living, dining and a full kitchen behind bi-fold doors that stack all the way back. Spotted gum underfoot, a Smeg coffee machine, Sonos, and a laundry.

Bottom level: a self-contained apartment with a queen bedroom, a loft with a double bed, its own lounge, kitchenette, bathroom and balcony. Grandparents, teenagers or a second family, with a door they can close.

Currumbin

The beach is across the street. Currumbin Alley, one of the gentlest surf breaks on the coast, is a short walk, with the creek behind it for children and paddleboards. Cafes and the surf club are at the end of the road. Gold Coast Airport is ten minutes by car, Byron Bay an hour, Brisbane ninety minutes.

Currumbin sits under the airport's flight path, so planes pass from time to time. The house is solid concrete with double glazing and it has never bothered us, but it is worth knowing before booking anywhere in Currumbin.
